By now, any one who has played a Smash Bros game has encountered Goldeen when using a Pokeball.

When Goldeen is summoned, it'll use Splash. Some of you may be thinking, "Why isn't it Magikarp? Its synonymous with Splash!" While that my be true, there actually may be a reason as to why Goldeen uses Splash instead of Magikarp.

It's thought that Goldeen using Splash is a reference to the Pokemon anime, in which Misty's Goldeen, when outside of water, would do nothing but splash around hopelessly.

My wailord is appreciative that Anime logic does not apply in game.

It sounds pretty good depending on how ya phrase it. It doesn't seem concrete, but I can definitely see it.
I highly doubt it. It's likely just in reference to the fact that Goldeen is also just a fish, and would be totally useless out of water. Unless it's been stated to be a reference, it likely just is what it is.
