The Melee trophy system seems to be based on Gachapon machines. Gachapon machines are essentially vending machines with capsules containing figurines inside. For 100-500 yen (1-5$) you can buy a Gachapon from the machine. The catch is that the item you get is random. Because it's sealed in a capsule, you never know what you're going to get. Melee's trophy system is a vending machine with capsules inside (most likely containing the trophies). For coins earned in game, you can buy trophies from the machine. However, much like Gachapon, the trophy is random, and only by pumping more coins in are you more likely to get something new.
