It's actually not a translation error; it was done intentionally. 4Kids didn't want anything Japanese making it into the dub.

Its a cultural defense thing. Like it or not, there are actually a lot of people in Japan that think we're stupid, and they figure the closer to our culture, the better to avoid confusion.
