Well deserved progression.

That happened a couple of weeks ago -- good call, if you ask me. Rome has better things to spend money on now, rather than invest in an event that might be cost-effective in 8+ years.
After failing a drug test and while being treated for depression, Tyson Fury has vacated the two Heavyweight boxing titles he held (he vacated a third one when he opted to a re-match with Klitscho and not a mandatory fight with another opponent).

The WBC dropped 25 boxers from it's ranking for failure to enroll in it's Clean Boxing Program. Notable names on this list are: former heavyweight titleholder David Haye; former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal; junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan; welterweight contenders Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson, both former junior welterweight titleholders; junior lightweight contender Yuriorkis Gamboa, a former unified featherweight titleholder; and top prospect lightweight Felix Verdejo.

And, Paul Pierce plans to sign a ONE DAY DEAL with the Bostin Celtics after the 2016-2017 season to retire as a Celtic. Currently, Paul Pierce is playing for the Los Angeles Clippers under coach Doc Rivers, who also coached Pierce on the Celtics.
The Jays are down 2-0 in the series, which is terrible, but hot damn the Cubs are crushing LA.
LA scored two in the top of the eighth to draw the game 3-3, but then the Cubs hit a Grand Slam and another home run just because. 3-8.
Feel kind of sorry for the LA pitcher.

In the rankings, why do some teams have a number in brackets ?
E.g. Alabama (58)
That's the number of first place votes those teams received.

Alabama, of course, is the front runner in the rankings. And, they stomped the Tennessee Volunteers arse yesterday (it hurts to see our team drop so many spots). We had 7 starters either not start or play and the fans didn't have much affect even though we have one of the most feared stadiums in the country.

Oh, well. We have a bye week this week and we are no longer in the toughest part of our schedule. I'd really love to win out and play in the SEC Championship (maybe Texas A&M can surpass Alabama and we can play them again).

What do the first place votes achieve ? Does it give them more points ?
Each person (I think 61 in the AP Poll) creates their list of the top 25 teams as their "vote". Each team that gets a first place votes gets 25 points, seconds place votes get 24 points, etc. for each vote. The points are added up for each team and then rankings are determined by the sum.
The Associated Press Poll is the most commonly referenced poll for rankings, but others exist.

The College Football Playoffs are determined by a 13 person committee (I just learned Condoleezza Rice is on it) who determine the 4 teams that play for a chance to win the College Football Playoff National Championship presented by Dr. Pepper.
The Chicago Bulls are in the works to trade Tony Snell for Michael Carter-Williams. The Bulls have already acquired Dwayne Wade (who stated that he and Lebron James almost signed with the Bulls in 2010) and Rajon Rondo. This in addition to Jimmy Butler already being on the team. Things are getting interesting in Chicago.
Pitcher Trevor Bauer was forced to leave (due to blood gushing from his pinky) after pitching only 2/3 of the first inning in the third ALCS between the Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays. The Indians used 7 pitchers and held on for the win, currently leading the series 3-0.
