In 2014 there was word that another 3D Mario game was on it's way for the Wii U which would've started it's development after SM3DW's completion: https://web.archive.org/web/201407022111...es_by_date

Thought it might be something like a SMG3 or a new 3D Mario Adventure. Sadly though this New 3D Mario Game for the Wii U never came to be, makes me wonder if Super Mario Odyssey ever started out as a Wii U Game before moving over to the Switch.

Good hypothesis, it makes sense. Hopefully Nintendo can shed some light in the subject.

As stated in here, we had the announcement of a New 3D Mario Game coming to Wii U in 2014, but it never came be, as stated here. Besides, we hadn't even known about the Switch in 2014 or when SM3DW was released.
