Paid mods on Steam. - retrolinkx - 04-24-2015 Wait seriously, it took two days for ME to make this topic? I thought one of you guys would do it, I swear one of you is like super pc master race or something? It's big news. Seriously, why wasn't this a thread or at least in gaming news or something. Anyhow... Valve have gone full EA mode and have allowed for certain mods to be paid for I think it's pretty horrible. Mods are something you make to give to the community for free, it's not something you can charge a quick buck for, it's a terrible move by valve, but it only really affects people who still play Skyrim in this day and age but it's apparently going to expand. I get I have other means for mods, but if Valve are trying it, who is to say others won't or the creators might switch to make mods for Valve for some exclusivity and money. RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Psychospacecow - 04-24-2015 That fishing mod they frontlined got pulled for theft. RE: Paid mods on Steam. - RepentantSky - 04-24-2015 You know I heard about this when it happened, but I just don't care. It was bound to happen at some point and valve has been making some moves lately that I don't find favorable. Looking forward to that Fallout 4 announcement ! Now with horse cod-pieces ($2.99) ! RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Mass Distraction - 04-25-2015 Points were made. Also, here is the sister thread from Resource. http://www.vg-resource.com/thread-27037-post-588135.html#pid588135 http://imgur.com/gallery/nn47B RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Psychospacecow - 04-25-2015 http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/33uplp/mods_and_steam/ Gabe's doing an AMA on Reddit about this. RE: Paid mods on Steam. - SERIOUSLY THOUGH - 04-25-2015 Reading that, my mind is still trying to comprehend this all. I really hope the idea fails, it sets such a dangerous precedent. We're moving more and more towards paying for all the little niggles. In other news, at Subway, $7 will now only get you the bread. $1.99 for each add-on DLC. RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Arjahn - 04-26-2015 I'm working on my super exclusive Skyrim mod add-on that let's you experience the entire game as a ghost! (it's the invisibility spell and you make spooky ghost noises the entire time. $1.99 please) RE: Paid mods on Steam. - BumblebeeCody - 04-27-2015 (04-25-2015, 07:58 PM)SERIOUSLY THOUGH Wrote: Reading that, my mind is still trying to comprehend this all. I don't want to change the topic into DLC, but you'd be surprised by how many people stick up for this. Like how they've paid full price for a product with locked away content and then defend a company on it. As for this, yes it's a shit idea BUT, I think it was made with best intentions. It's Valve testing out a new idea and people already hate it. No real issue, it'll be gone soon. But I think it also shows how gamers can be just as a big of a scumbags as the the big corporate entities within gaming. "Put some shit fishing mod up on Steam and charge people for it as opposed to the Brutal Doom mod I just downloaded which is free". RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Melcadrien - 04-27-2015 Looks like the whole paid mod thing is being pulled/is now pulled. All of the people lashing out against it apparently was enough for them to do something about it. And, Yes, the money is being refunded. https://steamcommunity.com/games/SteamWorkshop/announcements/detail/208632365253244218 RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Psychospacecow - 04-27-2015 http://kotaku.com/valve-cancels-paid-mods-for-skyrim-1700526130 Pay mod is kill... and I'm late. RE: Paid mods on Steam. - Arjahn - 04-27-2015 Damn, no more ghost mode for me. But honestly, Paid Mods are an inevitability, and rightfully so. Of course I'm not talking about paying $.49 for a sword or buggy armor or any of that shit they so horribly implemented with the launch of this fusterclucking idea, but mods that completely change the game have been and will be made and monetized, and that's not so bad. Counterstrike, DOTA, Team Fortress and more started off as mods and grew into massive franchises from there, which really baffles me because Valve employees were instrumental in two of those and yet they still found a way to fuck this whole thing up. Maybe the guys who make these game changing Skyrim side campaigns with hours upon hours of content deserve a small amount of compensation for their time and effort crafting masterful free DLC, I don't know, it's all really messy right now. I do know one thing, the Steam Workshop aint no app store, and hopefully it'll stay that way. That's my two cents, gonna go buy $20 worth of silly coloured hats in Team Fortress and probably join a conga line. |
