That one game you tried to like but couldn't. - retrolinkx - 04-15-2014

So, we've all played a lot of video games over time, but what's that one game you played, possibly completed, but did not care for it one bit, even though you tried to.

For me, I had a few. Devil May Cry springs to mind. I tried to like it but couldn't. I've loved all the other games similar to that like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising (if it counts) but I just couldn't bring myself to like it.

Another game is Mass Effect. I never really liked the series in general, and I forced myself through it. I finished all of them but I never liked them that much.

Assassin Creed is probably the one I have never liked but still completed all of them up to Asscreed 3. I've still got Black Flag taunting me, which I'll eventually complete, but I doubt I'll like it.

So guys, what games have you tried to like but just can't.

Devil May Cry 1 also counts for me. I just could not get into it.

Most sports games.

Most Resident Evil games. I own 1, 2 and Code: Veronica (which reminds me, I need to get around to playing that) and I have played 5, 6, and Mercenaries, and the only one that I have liked is 5.

Assassin's Creed is one of mine too. InFamous being the other. I haven't gotten into the second game or the new one that just came out (Second Son) but the control scheme for the first one and the fact that the main guy is the typical tough guy grunt you see in a million other games, it is hard to get behind him. AND HE HAS LIGHTING POWERS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!

To be fair I liked Mass Effect. First one not so much, a little clunky in that one. Second and Third I like just because they kept improving from the previous one. Don't know what it was for you to not like it, but for me it was a good game series in my book, but to each their own right.

Only other one that comes to mind right now would be Resident Evil. For me, other than 2 and 4 the other ones just didn't click for me. Not because of Leon, they could have had anyone in those and I'd probably still like them. Both just offered more in the way of story to me along with the creepy atmosphere. The others were just clunky pieces of crap, especially the first one. I have the director's cut version from the PSN and those live-action cutscenes are just awful. I know it was the 90's and it was the big thing back then but thankfully they went in the CGI direction instead....for all that was worth.

Personally I don't have too many games that I tried to like. I'm sure there are others but can't think of any right now.

What's wrong with Lighting powers? I kinda like the games.

The RE games are not really great when it comes to story. It's always been evil guys using a virus to rule the world or something like that (or at lest that's how it seems to me). Also, RE1 is a LOT better on Gamecube because the bad voice acting is gone.

Secret of Mana may be a SNES classic, but not according to me.
I just couldn't do it. Same for Secret of Evermore.

Deus Ex. It was one of those 'sacred classics of gaming' that my roommate kept taunting me to play. I finally got around to playing it and thought it felt unstructured. I pushed through it just to say I beat it, but can't say I truly enjoyed it a lot.

I'm in love with the RE games because I played them as a child and fell in love with the 'lore' surrounding them. The Spencer Mansion, the outbreak, etc. It was one of the first games where I realized there was a lot going on behind the scenes. But I thought it started getting a little out of hand with RE5, and I haven't even played it or RE6. I loved RE4 because it was fun with the over-the-shoulder action, inventory management, money management, etc., but I didn't really play it for the story. I dropped the series after that.

I'm gonna get shot down for saying this, but I couldn't get into Star fox. I didn't understood why people would enjoy this game(on the positive side, I'd rather be looking at something Star Fox related then hear anything related to 'what the fox say').

Nothing wrong with Lighting Powers, I'm saying that the despite having them Cole was not a good enough character for me to get behind added in with clunky controls and bad guys that take waaaay too much damage from electrical shocks to make me want to give a crap. I jump from a high rise, shockwave the crap out of everything, blow up cars, probably kill pedestrians but the bad guy I'm trying to kill is still standing.....WTF!?

I'm gonna get some serious hate for this, but any and all RPG's from the west. That includes Mass Effect, Borderlands and Fallout. I cannot get into any of them. To me, that is not what an RPG is so I can't enjoy them.

Oh wow, really? Not even Star Fox 64? For some reason that game became really special to me.

In my case, it's newer Pokemon games. I actually really enjoy X and Y, but there was a massive gap starting after the original Gold and Silver that I hated it all (except for Heart Gold ans Soul Silver).

Star Fox 64 made me very dizzy as a kid when I first saw it(I'm not kidding). Maybe I'll give it a shot again one day. But not now.

Understandable, plus the controls are a little wonky and everything but the Arwing sucks to maneuver. It's one of those games that was good when it came out, but didn't hold up well.

I just fell in love with the cheesy voice acting, flying was fun, and I enjoyed working in a team unit rather than a solo adventure (I hadn't discovered RPGs yet).

RE: That one game you tried to like but couldn't. - GameWizard001 - 04-15-2014

Oh, Xenogears was another for me. So many people think of it as this high end RPG classic but after a certain point I stopped caring what it was all about. It just kept going and going with almost no end in sight. One second I thought I knew where it was going and I was enjoying it but then it takes a different turn and I could no longer follow the story. They just kept throwing out plot elements after another but nothing to explain it as if they assume a player will stick it out so that they could then reveal what it all means.

Dark Souls.

I get it, the game kicks your ass and punishes the everloving sh*t out of you constantly, but the interface was clunky and I don't think that destroying my entire save file because I wanted to see if I could whack the merchant is as much "hardcore" as it is "pointlessly overkill". And I know that the arguement could easily be made that the game is punishing me accordingly and that I brought it on myself, and that's probably a fair point, it just left a really sour taste in my mouth.
