Nintendo on Popeye - G-Haven - 07-31-2014 As mentioned on the site already and relatively well known, the Donkey Kong arcade game was the result of negotiations with King Features Syndicate, the at-time right holders for Popeye, falling through and resulting in the game having to be reworked into Donkey Kong. Nearly a year later, after seeing the massive success of Donkey Kong, King Features Syndicate re-established contact with Nintendo with a proposition for a potential Popeye video game. A deal was struck and in December 1982, the Popeye arcade game was released. http://classicgames.about.com/od/arcadegames/p/History-Of-Popeye-The-Arcade-Game.htm http://classicgames.about.com/od/toppicks/tp/Best-Arcade-Games-1982-Peak-Of-The-Video-Arcade.htm also mentioned in The History Of Nintendo, Vol 1, by Florent Gorges with collaboration with Isao Yamazaki, published by Pix'n Love Publishing.
