Kirby & Darth Mual - Boyobmas - 08-07-2014

I belive that the Electric/Cutter ability from Kirby 64 is a clear refrence to the character Darth Maul from the film "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace"
I can prove it in 3 simple steps.

1. JUST LOOK AT IT! It's hard to deny that this is not a refrence to Darth Maul's famous double-sided lightsaber.
Comparison:

2. The Weapon itself makes lightsabery sounds when used.

3. This refrence would make perfect sense considering Phantom Menace came out in 1999, one year prior to Kirby 64.

Am I the only one who called this the "Darth Maul Power-up" as a kid?

I also think that Kirby does a simaler move to Darth Maul when he attacks, but that could be Me just not remembering the movie.

Always reminded me of Bastila Shan from KOTOR, even though that came out in 2003.

I was going to post that as well but I thought the 3 reasons i already have were enough.

Could we get a comparison?

Hate to be that guy, but the two don't sound similar at all. Kirby just makes generic "woosh" sounds when swinging it.

He's right, sadly. Just watched the video and it does not make the "voom" when he swings it. It does make a little buzz but not the same as the lightsaber. :(

The weapon itself makes makes a electronic whizzing sound but it's quiet and kind of hard to hear. I would recommend playing the game yourself to hear it fully since all the YouTube videos I could find had some sort of commentary over the sound.

I've played the game through a dozen times. Image wise, sure. Sounds wise, I agree entirely that they sounds very different. Plus, it leaves behind a electric ball after defeating an enemy. It's an electric weapon, not heat based, like a lightsaber.

I think you guys thinking WAY too hard about this. It's an obvious refrence to Darth Maul's weapon. I don't think it needs to exactly like it.

RE: Kirby & Darth Mual - Psychospacecow - 08-08-2014

Is it the same sound in all versions? It could be like in Smash Bros where the laser sword sounds like a light saber in the Japanese version.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was.

RE: Kirby & Darth Mual - Takahashi2212 - 08-14-2014

Just checked. In both the Japanese and American versions, the SFX for the dual-lighting sword weapon are the same.

They both make the electrical humming noise when out, and the same whoosh noise when swung.

RE: Kirby & Darth Mual - ClaudX - 08-14-2014

If you're going to submit it, I'd submit it as a reference to simply Star Wars instead of Darth Maul because there is not a lot of evidence supporting the suggestion that it's a direct reference to him.
