Gen V's Pokemon Numbers - Takahashi2212 - 12-21-2014

Generation V (Black & White 1/2) is the only Generation of Pokemon (so far) to introduce more Pokemon than the original amount found in Red/Blue (151).

Here are the numbers for Each generation:

Red & Blue: 151 Total Pokemon

Gold & Silver: 251 Total Pokemon, 100 New Pokemon added.

Ruby & Sapphire: 386 Total Pokemon, 135 New Pokemon added.

Diamond & Pearl: 493 Total Pokemon, 107 Pokemon added.

Black & White: 649 Total Pokemon, 156 Pokemon added.

X & Y: 709 Total Pokemon, 70 Pokemon Added.

Also, a thing worth noting is that Gen V was the first Generation to not add a pre-evolution/evolution to an existing Pokemon. This trend would continue into Gen VI.

Gen6 introduced the Mega Evolutions, though. So, technically they had new evolutions for old pokemon.

Mega evolutions are a completely different gameplay mechanic and do not count as different pokemon by any means, so no, they really don't count even on a technicality.

Gen VI added 69 Pokemon, though later 72 with the addition of Diancie, Volcanion and Hoopa.
