Globetrotter 2 - Unused sound files - Kitsune Hawk - 08-27-2015 After finding the data for the three fully programmed unused cities in Globetrotter 2's files, I managed to find more evidence of unused locations within the game's folder for music and sound effects. [ Globetrotter 2/DATA/SND.zip/trivia ] Within the files, each city has a code number from 0 to 70 (with 0 corresponding to common files for each in-game location). I'm putting this list in a spoiler tag, since it is rather long, but there are a few numbers skipped for reasons unknown. Green denotes locations used in the final game and red for unused locations or blank spots in the sound database.
0 - Common Data 1 - Paris, France 2 - Unknown city with sound files 3 - Athens, Greece 4 - København, Denmark 5 - Unknown city with sound files 6 - Bangkok, Thailand 7 - London, United Kingdom 8 - Unknown city with sound files 9 - Zanzibar, Tanzania 10 - Berlin, Germany 11 - Unknown city with sound files 12 - Unknown city with sound files 13 - Unknown city with sound files 14 - Unknown city with sound files 15 - New Delhi, India 16 - Unknown city with sound files 17 - Sydney, Australia 18 - Montreal, Canada 19 - Stockholm, Sweden 20 - Budapest, Hungary 21 - Unknown city with sound files 22 - Unknown city with sound files 23 - Unknown city with sound files 24 - St. Petersburg, Russia 25 - Unknown city with sound files 26 - Unknown city with sound files 27 - Shanghai, China 28 - Unknown city with sound files 29 - Unknown city with sound files 30 - San Francisco, USA 31 - The Maldives 32 - Manila, Philippines 33 - Unknown city with sound files 34 - Unknown city with sound files 35 - Hawaii, USA 36 - Unknown city with sound files 37 - Unknown city with sound files 38 - Oslo, Norway 39 - Galapagos, Ecuador 40 - Unknown city with sound files [Slots 41 to 49 have no files at all] 50 - Washington D.C., USA 51 - Alaska, USA 52 - Yemen (Yemen & Saudi Arabia) 53 - New Zealand 54 - Tokyo, Japan 55 - Costa Rica 56 - Boston, USA 57 - Havana, Cuba 58 - Thimphu, Bhutan 59 - Ireland 60 - Iceland 61 - Tanzania 62 - Amazonas, Brazil 63 - Mount Everest (Nepal & China) 64 - The Wild West, USA 65 - Sahara (Algeria, Niger, Mali) 66 - Lhasa, Tibet 67 - El Mundo Maya (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize) 68 - Samarkand, Uzbekistan 69 - Irkutsk, Russia 70 - Amsterdam, Netherlands
My only guess here is that these may have been composed for cities that did not make it into the programming phase or are unused earlier versions of the sound files used in the final product. RE: Globetrotter 2 - Unused sound files - Kitsune Hawk - 08-28-2015 For those curious, this is what the interior of [ Globetrotter 2/DATA/SND.zip/trivia ] looks like. ![]() RE: Globetrotter 2 - Unused sound files - Kitsune Hawk - 08-29-2015 I think I may have figured this out, actually! These unused sounds and city numbers are from the original Globetrotter! Both games were released within 9 months of each other (the original was released in 2000 and the sequel in 2001), so perhaps they shared the same database for city data, since both games appear to run on the same setup. The city data for the original Globetrotter only goes up to 40, which explains the blank space between values 40 and 50 in Globetrotter 2's data, as well as why values 50 - 70 are all new locations. These unused sound files? They're leftover data from the original game! The sequel was built within the original game's files, most likely, so they updated the files for the cities returning from the original, yet curiously left behind the "trivia correct" sound effects from the cities that were not reused.
