Wario's in-universe origins - KnowledgeBase - 04-09-2013

We all know Wario is a clone of Mario but his in-universe origins have never been completely explored in the series. There have been attempts to create Wario's backstory in many Nintendo licensed media.

The first was in the comic "Super Mario: Die Verwandlung" (which translates to Super Mario: The transformation) published in issue 1/1993 of the German Club Nintendo magazine.

In the comic, Mario wakes up and finds himself appearing a bit pixelated. He sees his GP, Dr. Light, who believes that by duplicating and merging Mario back will cure him. Mario is duplicated successfully however instead of creating a double of Mario, it has created Wario. Wario then escapes Dr. Light's lab to cause havoc, however he is eventually caught and merged back into Mario.

Later comics tried to explore Wario's youth and how his rivalry with Mario began. The first comic was "Mario vs. Wario" published on January, 1993 in issue #44 of Nintendo Power.

Mario and Wario during their youth were friends, however in any activity that they played resulted in Wario either getting hurt or humilitated believeing Mario to be the cause for his bad luck.

The next comic was "Warios Weihnachtsmärchen" (which translates to Wario's Christmas Tale) published in issue 6/1995 of the German Club Nintendo magazine.

A parody of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, when Wario meets the Ghost of Past who resembles Toad, he shows Wario flashbacks of his youth. As babies, Wario and Mario are both building sandcastles but due to how mean Wario has been to people, he has no friends compared to Mario. The next scene shows Mario and Wario at their graduation ball. Wario wanted Peach, Princess Toadstool, to be his girlfriend, however because Mario has been much nicer to her, she instead dances with him.

Whilst all 3 comics are officially licensed by Nintendo and have been on some occasions republished, they have never been acknowledged by Nintendo.

Wario has however appeared as a baby in Yoshi's Island DS released in 2006.

Well Yoshi's Island DS was the first appearance of Baby Wario. He was greedy since he was a Baby however he had no quarrel with Mario at the time. In Mario Superstar Baseball he is said to have been Mario's childhood friend.

In which Mario Baseball game does it say this? Is it in-game or in the instruction booklet or strategy guide?

It's in the one for the Gamecube. You can read the Player Bio in the actual game.

"According to Wario, he's both Mario's rival and a childhood friend. He actually runs his own video-game company and
has produced many hot sellers. Garlic is Wario's favorite food. It may lead to his incredible stamina, which makes him excellent at daring plays."
