I do recall having some memories about Sailormoon, watched an episode here and there. This year is really unfortunate to everyone.

How about we look at it from this perspective:
It's not that more people are dying, it's more of the fact that we're more aware of it due to how easy it is to find out about deaths. Social networking has really brought this stuff more to the forefront, with or without ANN and other news/media outlets.
This is still sad though.
