Control and the minus symbol “-“ or control and backscroll on your mouse should do the trick.

I also hold down "Ctrl" and scroll up and down to zoom in and out.
Also, TRASH THAT PROPERTY OF SATAN!

For reference, Ctrl + 0 will reset the zoom level to default.
As for Vista, it definitely wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. A lot of the negative press actually came from the beta (which was awful) but the only real issue I had with it was that it was a bit power hungry and therefore not suited well for laptops. It worked fine on desktops.
