This article states that a Nintendo composer named Kazumi Totaka also landed the voice acting roles for both Yoshi and Professor E. Gadd, according to the article, the legends say that he landed the iconic role of Yoshi by making up the sound effects himself to show off while Yoshi was hopping through a prototype version of the game during a development meeting and the voice stuck.
It should also be noted that the character K.K. Slider from Animal Crossing is based off of Totaka himself with the characters real name being Totakeke.
