Fighting game with the largest roster (open discussion) - KnowledgeBase - 09-28-2013

I was hoping to possibly post a fact on the website about the fighting game with the largest number of playable characters, however in my fact finding I have discovered two somewhat conflicting facts.

The PS1 game "Tobal 2" is recognized by the Guiness World Records as the current holder with 200 different fighters.

However, the PS2 game "Fire Pro Wrestling Returns" has a roster of 327 playable characters (not counting the additional 500 custom character slots).

Whilst it's possible they could be considered to be both under the same category, Tobal 2 is an arcade fighter whilst "Fire Pro Wrestling Returns" is a wrestling game. Would you consider these 2 games to be classified as part of the same genre/record or both under their own seperate categories ie. "Largest character roster in a fighting game" and "Largest character roster in a wrestling game"?

Well it depends whether you'd label wrestling as a fighting or a sports game I suppose.

I mean, DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi has a big roster and is considered fighting even though it has a layer of anime paint on it.
I don't see why Fire Pro couldn't be considered fighting.

Personally I do count wrestling games as fighters. They are just based on a 3D arena instead of the 2D style often used by fighters. Even then, and as Psycho mentioned, there are games that are definitely labeled as fighters and use a 3D arena.

If you consider Tekken a fighter, or Soul Calibur, then you got the 3d part down.

What I meant was the kind of a free-roam 3D arena, as presented by Budokai Tenkaichi, for example. Tekken and Soul Calibur, even if they have a 3D arena, are still bound by the 2D perspective.

The only two games I know that have the largest roster are DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and DB Heroes (an arcade, carddass game in Japan).
