General Anime/Manga/Otaku Thread
True. The honorifics don't really translate all that well to English.

I just started watching Death Note for the first time and I have to say I really like and I am only 5 episodes in.

I still don't know why to this day why so many Americans are so obsessed with anime and I'm really am stumped, yet to have a clear answer on why so far. (Don't mean to sound harsh, just curious that's all)

Anyway, I would if anyone can since it is going to be a mountain of a task to recommend any anime that is suitable. Now basically describing my likes is very hard due to not watching much TV at all and the stuff that is on isn't really interesting to me due to most of them either being dramas, scripted and fixed game shows, comedies/talk shows that I don't find funny at all or geared towards 50-60 year old demographic [e.g. cooking, antiques shows, documentaries] all repeated a million times on various channels. Either that or stress.

Out of the limited shows that I watch are Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog [even then not every episode and pretty much my fav], Futurama [episode by episode case and even then the older ones are better], Simpsons [usually episode by episode case, prefer up to Season 9 but after that is okay until the current HD era where episodes are stiff and as dull as a soap opera], Looney Tunes - usually the Bugs Bunny shorts but also Road Runner and Daffy Duck [you probably guessed it by now], the various Mario cartoons even if they are rubbish, Donkey Kong Country, Danger Mouse even if I haven't seen it in years and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. As you can see it makes even strictiest censorship look tame by comparison. The only live action shows that I actually do like are Only Fools and Horses, Bottom, Mr. Bean and Benidorm (not for the humour but it is the case of recognising the places) even then it is hard to describe what that is towards Americans.

Movies are probably easier to explain, stuff like The Blues Brothers and its hated sequel [I'm certain there was a Blues Brothers type of anime], Terminator 2, Trading Places, Jason Bourne, James Bond (especially the Brosnon/Sean Connery types), RoboCop, Vinnie Jones version of Mean Machine, classic Star Wars Trilogy, even Shirley Valentine.

The main problem is that some anime (even the Studio Ghilbi movies) deal with death, murder or suicide and that upsets me quite a bit so nothing that references death/murder/suicide please. I mean some one saying Prepare to die or stuff along them lines are okay but showing it is a different matter. Another thing is that I'm not into giant robots, fan service, pervertiness [years ago I thought that Arcade Gamer interested me until I realised that she gets her powers from a fan up her butt and that fact really put me off], trading cards or anything competitive based, slice of life shows or teenagers and schools [even if they are in a different era] so that's a vast majority of anime out of the picture. Also from the ones that I looked at below, the animation style seems bad frame rate skipping that bothers me so preferable to be as smooth as possible but I know most anime do this for budget reasons [cartoons just outsource them to South Korea or China].

Preferably in English however am acceptable to Japanese audio/English sub if it is unavailable. Also it has to be sort of easy to find, not going through obscure Hong Kong dubs that only one website had that has long gone.

Out of the ones that I watched and tried, none of them appealed to me. Wasn't interested in Dragon Ball Z, tried to watch Sonic X 6 times with 6 different episodes and didn't enjoy it at all, gave up on Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagelistro after 45 minutes, the less said about Sailor Moon the better. I swear if I watched any more episodes of that I would be sent to prison on murder charges, no joke (that goes against my personality). Pokemon caused me to cry as well.

Sonic the Movie (Sonic OVA, the one with the President and the cat girl), Art of Fighting and Ninja Gaiden were okay but they were one shots [or two shots for the former that combined into one] and most people don't like the latter two especially Art of Fighting.

MexicanAnime Wrote:As silly as this sounds, I do think there's at least one anime out there for each person that they will really enjoy.

Sadly so far, it seems to be yet to be the case for me even though it is true for most people.

You have just made it extremely hard for me to recommend anime to you, because just about every action anime, that isn't geared toward kids, has death in it, and my favorite anime deals with the subject of death. I mean I guess you could try watching Eureka Seven, there are parts where people die in it though, very seldomly but it happens, as for what kind of show it is, it's a drama with a bit of action here and there but mostly focused on the drama side of things. To be honest that's all I got for you, what with just about anything else I'd recommend either dealing with death as a main plot point or showing a lot of it, although Eureka Seven is pretty cheesy from time to time, I mean there's usually at least one moment in every episode that make me just shake my head because it's so cheesy.

Have you tried Flint the time detective? It's kind of a kids show though, I remember watching it when I was young, it was okay, it might be something down your alley.

Why did you ask to be suggested an anime when you just described disliking literally everything about anime?

@Yawackhary I've read your post twice and I'm still not sure what you really want. Do want us to play anime match making by matching up various things from the things you like; or do you want us to give something that's not anime? Either way for something this specific all I can tell you is either lower your standards and experiment a little or you might as well stay in your bubble and not try to experience anime at all.

I'm going to sound like a complete asshole by saying this, but woah dude, I have never come across someone who's so picky with their taste. I'm with Matt in this in where you need to experiment with it a bit more.

Most of what you mentioned would make it so hard to recommend..well, anything in a visual medium. Even in the stuff you liked, it included some of the stuff you mentioned you didn't like. If you want, I can recommend some stuff that might have a few things you excluded, but not the majority.

The best show I'd want to recommend to you would be Mushishi, as you come off as someone who might enjoy it. Try out the first episode as it's honestly a good indicator whether you will like the series or not.

Really, ruling out death takes out about 50% of anime, and then about another 30% are dumb kids shows that I wouldn't recommend for anyone, so it makes it really hard to recommend anime just ruling out death alone.

@Yawhackary: Sheesh, you ain't making this easy, man. After some thinking I guess I could recommend stuff like OH! Super Milk Chan, Cyborg 009, Final Fantasy Unlimited, King of Fighters: Another Day and and since you liked the Art of Fighting movie, all Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, Tekken and Street Fighter movies. You could also try all of the other video-game based anime movies, like Final Fantasy. Since I'm not sure what your stance on kid's shows are I'm not gonna recommend any.

This is tough since most of my favorite animes revolve around either mechas, death or slice-of-life stuff.

Tried to think up of a new protagonist who would replace Ash Ketchum, it ended up being Ash Ketchum from Season 1.

^Why not just make a series with Red, Blue, Green and Yellow to begin with. You know, like in the manga and the actual games.

Hmm, this is quite interesting since I have read the Fate/stay night visual novel, and the sequel Fate/hollow ataraxia is almost done being translated into English, I may have to watch this when it comes out to see if it's any good.

Considering how they handled Fate Zero and the amount I have seen of Garden of Sinners, I trust them completely.

JUST ANIMATE ME HEAVENS FEEL, THAT'S ALL I WANT AS THAT COULD EASILY BECOME ONE OF MY FAVORITE ANIMES OF ALL TIME.
