Gambling in games

Basically, what do you think of it when a game throws in slots, roulette, blackjack, and craps like that? I personally don't mind the inclusion of things like this, but they're usually necessary to unlock certain things or complete quests/achievements, and frankly, that's a problem for me, because I'm gonna about to learn how to play a game to play a game in my game.

Normally when I think of gambling in a video game there are two things that come to mind: Casino Night Zone and the Celadon City Game Corner. Basically, I don't mind the mini-games, until they start making me play them to advance on in the game's story.

Some problematic examples come out of Farcry 3 and Fallout NV.

You need to win games of Caravan, the game's invented gambling card game which is complex as heck, to get an achievement.

To beat a side quest in Far Cry 3, you need to beat 3 npcs at Poker. Never beat that one.

Dead Rising 2 taught me the basics of Poker.....and how to not be distracted by a woman's boobs while playing (Jessica).

Thinking about it, I HATE the gambling mini-games in the Assassin's Creed games. They need to be beaten to get 100% and that makes completing the game less fun.

I hate it so much. I don't really understand a thing to poker. And it's like they need to put this mini-game everywhere! A game where you need to kill zombies? Poker! A game where you hack traffic lights? Poker! When I have to do it in order to have an achievement or something, I do it, but it takes forever because this is so uselessly slow.

I really liked the gambling in Red Dead Redemption. It really added to the game world.

You know, I really preferred the slots in Pokémon to the Voltorb Flip seen in Soul Silver and Heart Gold, too.

Lucky hit? Does anyone want to play a game of Lucky hit?

In general, I think it's a good way of getting money when you need it. In Shenmue 2 there is a section where you need around $1000 to continue, so the best thing to do is save before betting on a $100 game, it's useful for that kind of stuff, but in games where Money can be found so easily like in New Vegas I found gambling to just be kinda boring.

I did break the bank and was banned from all casinos, but that was with my 10 Luck character.

Funny thing is, in most games I've played, gambling was taken out or altered. I thought this thread was going to be about the controversy behind the slots in Pokemon, or something like that.

But yeah, it's such a pain to get a ridiculous amount of coins just if you want to add Porygon to your Pokedex. He's not even that good to use in matches.

Otherwise, the mahjong gambling option you could play in the Japanese version of Raidou's Devil Summoner games ended up being removed. It's common knowledge to the Japanese how it's played, so there's no tutorial, so Atlus just took it out since its only purpose is to get extra money. I still think that was silly of them since it was indeed optional and it's easy enough to use the internet to figure out how to play.

I love mahjong! I still have a demo disc with a full mahjong based Net Yaroze game. Played the crap out of that when I was a kid. If the game is simple enough to figure out without instructions, even to a Finnish kid, it should be to everyone. Weird that it was taken out, especially when it was optional.

I learned the rules of Blackjack due to Uncharted Waters: New Horizons (see how many people here know that SNES classic). Funny thing is, I actually wwon massive on it once playing (like 20,000,000 gold) and bought a bunch of ships. Over time, I overspent and was forced to cut away my crew I acquired from blackjack winnings.

PS Plus gave Poker Night 2 for free and I got it even though I had no clue how to play poker. After countless games of me not knowing what to do I slowly learned and understood how to play it. Now poker is fun and I usually play it in Red Dead Redemption and always cheat just for fun. Red Dead is also neat because if you lose a lot of money you can just get up from your chair and shoot everyone you just played with and still feel satisfied for losing.

I didn't think it did anything to impress me in GTA: San Andreas or Fable 2. I did find a shortcut to getting unlimited amounts of money through the horse races in San Andreas, though. You could be a millionaire before you ever started doing missions outside of the hood.

I didn't mind the gambling in Leisure Suit Larry: Land of the Lounge Lizards. Then again, when I first played Larry I had no idea how to gamble(blackjack). But thanks to the little save cheat I've managed to get by it.

I just beat the Liar's Dice gambling minigame in RDR to get the land deed for that one side mission. I think I got really lucky since that's all this minigame seems to be about.
