Hello VG Facts,
Back when I was a kid, I used to read a magazine called Disney Adventures that was filled with various articles, puzzles, and comics that were generally, but not always, Disney related. One exception during the first year of the magazine's publication was a Sonic themed comic that related a story that I've never seen or heard talked about since. In the story a brown hedgehog goes to the local kindly scientist, named Kintobor, to talk about how he can freakishly run faster than anyone else. Kintobor builds Sonic some running shoes that can handle the advanced speed, just before attempting to test Sonic's top speed on a specially built treadmill. However, Sonic breaks it when he breaks the sound barrier, and going so fast also turned him blue. The damage also caused a reaction that transformed Kintobor into a robot. Renaming himself Robotnik, he declares Sonic his enemy and attacks him. The comic ended there with an advertisement for the new Sonic game.
My question is, was this story canon, possibly just in America, and can you track it down? I'm not sure which of the first twelve issues of Disney Adventures it was in, but it would be neat to see it again.
Your help is appreciated.

Interesting. I'll have a look into this the next time I'm researching Sonic.

According to http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hed...nal_comic), it was considered canon in America and Europe until 1998. The comic you read was a reprint of what was a promotional comic to advertise the first Sonic game.

Thank you!

Didn't Kintobor have some weird reaction to an egg in his fridge that made him all evil and egg-like? I think I remember reading that in the comic.

After reading that, I realized that name is probably a pun off of those kinder chocolate eggs.

Actually, it's "Robotnik" backwards.

Why not both?

It could well be, but probably not. Due to the FDA, Kinder eggs aren't sold in America, where (I believe) that comic was produced. (EDIT: for the record, other brands of Kinder chocolate are available in the USA. The eggs are a no-show, though.) And perhaps I speak for myself, but I find the word "Kinder" to be less synonymous with chocolate eggs and more with the fact that it's the German for "children".

What you read sounds like a reprint of Sonic's origin story from Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, which came out fortnightly in the UK for several years. Sonic was originally brown, Kintobor developed Sonic's shoes to help him overcome his own limits as well as a giant wheel for measuring his speed, powered by the Chaos Emeralds, when the machine exploded, Sonic got his blue colour and super speed, and kindly, frail Kintobor became the evil and rotund Robotnik. I can scan the relevant issues if you want?

If you can scan the story, that'd be amazing! I've been interested in finding it ever since I first heard it in Official Nintendo Magazine a few years back.

Ah, so it does! It's quite an interesting read.
Plus it turns out that Kintobor became Robotnik by spilling soda on a computer.
