General Anime/Manga/Otaku Thread
Finished Flip Flappers, don't really know what to think of it. It was cute and mindless fun and all, adventures were had and the good guys saved the day, but apart from that it was like a poor mans Madoka.

Nothing was really special about it, Pure Illusion as a concept was fun but overall wasn't amazing, it was pretty boring for the most part, I only really enjoyed episodes, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 13 and the last three was because it was actually explaining the plot of the whole show and became kind of interesting at this point.

It had a nice artstyle, and the turnabout theme was great. I'd give it a 7/10 just because it was fine as an anime, but didn't really peak my interest much.

Also I'm going to give Kakegurui a try. It hurts to know this is going to replace Kaiji/Akagi as the "go to" gambling anime, so I might as well watch it to see if it's in any way good.

So after watching five episodes of Kakegurui, all I can really say is that it's not bad but it's nowhere as good as Kaiji. It's more a 7/10.

The main problem I have with the show (well besides the blatant fan service that's shoved in your face every damn minute) is that it feels like there is no real danger to any of the gambles that the main character takes, especially when everyone is a fucking kid of a rich politician or something so money is hardly the issue.

In one episode there was danger of loses all your fingernails and toenails, but as awful as that sounds it's currently the worse thing that can happen to the main character so far. Otherwise if you're too much in debt you become a "Housepet" which is sort of like a weird slave that does whatever other students say, but apart from that it's not even too bad. Housepet status is hard to break out of, and in some cases if you can't pay it back they literally plan out a life for you with some politician to be married to so money can be made back through that.

This is nothing like what could happen in Kaiji or Akagi, where death and loss of limbs/functions of the body were big big parts of the gambles. It feels like there is no real disadvantage to losing.

The main character is also too much of a Mary Sue, sure Akagi was never meant to lose in his games but at least he would show shock to something not going his way, or somehow find a way to turn the tables in his favour if one person were to cheat. With this anime the main character seems to be a step ahead of everyone and always smiles, never showing anything she did as a mistake, and even when she does lose she rejoices in it.

The only real interest this show has is the gambling. The gambling is pretty interesting and is done well mostly because everyone is cheating and the main character has to find a way to discover the cheating and work it into her strategy so that she can win. So each time she gambles, there is a challenge she must take.

Personally, if I were to do this show. I would've rather have had the main character be someone who got into this prestigious school via a competition that was similar to the Ultimate Lucky Student in Danganronpa (Out of everyone that could've been chosen to attend this school, Makoto was chosen and thus he must be very lucky) but otherwise she was from a poor background and stays out of the bets this school has, until one day she is forced to bet in a gamble that is obviously against her (other person is cheating and knows it, finds pleasure in picking on the weak) and through luck and intuition she turned the odds into her favour and wins, and from this one event everyone in the school wants to have a gamble with her, and she can't say no otherwise she'd be expelled.

The anime isn't bad since the music is really good, the gambles are interesting and the main character is fun to watch due to being unpredictable, but if you're aching for a gambling anime, watch Kaiji first and then this.

For the month of October, I've designed to read two manga that have been in the backlog for some time, Franken Fran and Pet Shop of Horrors.

Currently on the third volume of Fran and I'm kinda surprised. I was expecting a horror manga with body horror elements (which, yes it does have in spades). What I got was this plus some black comedy and some touching moments. One minute, Fran will be turning a girl that got ran over into a caterpillar and splitting another girl in two to stop a love triangle (which goes on to a sequel story where the girl just keeps multiplying). Later, Fran will be giving an entire school cosmetic surgery and trying to save a little boy who needs a miracle. There's also a reference to Saya no Uta (I believe it is at lest) as well as an ongoing story based on the first three series of Kamen Rider. The series does get scary sometimes, but I think it's more disturbing from all the disfigured bodies and implications that come from sewing an entire family together or becoming a big blob of cancer cell.

A new Boxing anime based on the Ashita no Joe franshise is going to be released in 2018. It is going to feature a brand new storyline.

Here's the teaser:

As someone who never read the original manga nor watched the two previous anime shows this are some really interesting news. Hopefully this can help me to get into the original series.

I was going to make this its own thread, but I think it will fit here.
Game Informer has a 2.5 hour long podcast on Dragon Ball. I'm not much of a fan but it is interesting to listen to.

What the hell are you doing here? Aren't you the same guy who thought "Fist of the North Star" was a reference to the state of Minnesota?

My post is meant to be playful banter. Please, do not start a flame war.
