Nintendo Direct (General)

Should be a big one with around 40 minutes of show games off. Hopefully we finally get some Bayo 3 and even just a small trailer for Metroid Prime 4.

I'm hoping for more info on Smash Bros DLC (like when Banjo will be released, or any new characters) - or, failing that, some new Pokemon for Sword/Shield!

Is DMC2 really coming to the Switch? Why? First DMC1 and now this? Is Capcom really going to port each DMC game individually to the Switch AND make people pay $20 for it?

Why do they refuse to port the HD collection? We had the HD collection since the PS3/X360 days, we also have the HD collection on PS4/Xone/PC, so why not port it to the Switch? It should be easy. Like I said, we had the HD collection since the 7th Gen of consoles. Not only that, but the HD collection is the same price as a single Switch port, that means three games for the price for one.

Foolishness, Capcom. Foolishness.

Oh, and Luigi's Mansion 3 looks fun.

a month late, but....

Nintendo says it still believes Directs are ‘effective’ but it could adapt them in future

Nintendo of America Wrote:On 7/20 we'll debut the first #NintendoDirect Mini: Partner Showcase, a series focused on titles from our development & publishing partners. We'll share a few updates on a small group of previously-announced #NintendoSwitch games. Check out the full video release at 7am PT.

On one hand, It's finally happening. Yay.

On the other hand, whoever thought that last minute reveals/announcements (and on midnight, none the less) was a good idea is an idiot.

SMT V and the Nocturne remaster were easily the highlights of this direct. Oh, and the Cadence of Hyrule DLC was cool, I guess.

BTW, the japanese Direct is 12 minutes long and by extension has more content (and yes, it had better reception compared to the Western direct).

Why does the Japanese Direct have more content? I don't know. It's specially confusing considering games like Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin already have English footage to work with.

Another Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase.

To be fair, this Partner Showcase wasn't half bad, actually. I'd say it's slightly better than the previous Partner Showcase (or at least it's better than the western version of the previous Partner Showcase).

Nintendo actually did it..... they shadowdropped a Mario 35th anniversary Direct.

THEY SHADOWDROPPED A DIRECT ABOUT THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR MOST IMPORTANT FRANCHISE!!! LMFAOOOOOOOOOO

Now, as for the annoucements. I'm not going to deny that the idea of a Mario 3D All Stars collection is cool and all, but it's kind of crappy that they neglected Galaxy 2 AND it's only a limited time release. Like, what's the point of doing that? Scalpers are definitely going to benefit from that. Not to mention that we have to pay 60$ for a collection of ports that are just that, ports of previous-gen games with HD support. The only thing that is "new" about this collection is the fact that it has a music player... and that's it. No concept art gallery, no developer interviews, nothing.

May I remind you of Super Mario All-Stars on SNES? Or Crash Bandicoot N-sane Trilogy AND the Spyro Reignited Trilogy if you want more recent examples? Those weren't just ports, they were remakes. What's more is that even thought the Crash and Spyro collections were remakes, their initial price was 40$ instead of 60$.
Why is that a collection of REMAKES is priced at 40$ while the barebones collection of ports is priced at 60$?

Worst part thought? People are still going to buy the 3D collection, thus telling Nintendo that it's okay to pull shit like this.

As for the Mario battle royale game. Why is it going to be available only for less than six months? Tetris 99 didn't have that limitation.

As for everything else? It was quite good.

EDIT: here is some information Nintendo did NOT mention in the Direct.

EDIT 2: I swear, Nintendo's marketing team continues to baffle me.
  •     March Indie World : Announced a day ahead of time
  •     March Mini Direct : Shadowdropped with no buildup
  •     Min Min Presentation : Announced ahead of time
  •     Random Nintendo Treehouse Presentation : Announced only a day before and randomly hypes up a game that turns out to be Bakugan
  •     July Partner Showcase: Announced at Midnight 10 hours beforehand.
  •     August Indie World : Announced a day ahead of time
  •     August Partner Showcase : Shadowdrop with no buildup (even though they didn't shadowdrop the first Partner Showcase?)
  •     Mario 35th Anniversary Direct : Shadowdropped with no buildup

And before you mention COVID-19, I seriously doubt things are so messed up at Nintendo right now that they can't give a one day notice on a Direct like this. It shouldn't be hard, just post a one day notice.

So my overall thoughts...
  • Positives:
    • We ended up getting not one, but two brand new Monster Hunter games. Color me impressed.
    • An announcement for a new Disgaea game.
    • A Switch port of Sniper Elite 4. Could've done better, but not a bad choice.
    • A reminder that Hades is coming to Switch today.
    • Some more info on Balan Wonderworld and Rune Factory 5.
    • A Switch port of Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Honestly not that surprising to me after the first one came to Switch, but still a cool announcement.
  • Negatives:
    • Still no news on Bayonetta 3 or Doom Eternal

Overall, I liked this Mini Partner Showcase more than the last two.

Oh, look. Another shadowdrop!

According to the video description, this will be the last Direct Mini: Partner Showcase of 2020.

This one was pretty good. Still no news on Bayonetta 3 and DOOM Eternal, thought.

The new Direct was really good. I liked it. It's a shame there were no Bayonetta 3 news but oh well.

EDIT: Here's something that was only shown in the Japanese Direct. A Crayon Shin-chan game.

For all you Europeans and Asians out there. Fatal Frame = Project Zero.

Holy shit, a new Metroid game? And is a sequel to Fusion? Awesome. BTW, they said that Metroid Prime 4 is still in development right before unveiling Dread.

Advance Wars is back too? After years of Intelligent System completely disregarding it in favor of its sister series Fire Emblem? What a nice surprise.
