I think Silent Hill is dying because the current dev team is made up of people who never worked on the first three, so they don't seem to understand why making combat good is actually hurting the series. I mean, compare Homecoming, Origins, and Downpour with the first three games. In the newer games, combat is done pretty good (for a horror game), so there's no tension when an enemy comes at you. You can just pull out a knife or an axe and just wail on them until they're dead. In the first three games, combat was something you avoided because enemies not only took forever to kill, but they could kill you in about three or so hits. You didn't want to go near them.
Not only that, but the stories in the newer games aren't as interesting. Maybe it's just me, but the 'twists' in the recent games are kinda easy to see coming, and don't have the same impact as the ones from the older games.
