While I personally love games with enormous rosters of fighters (whether or not the balance suffers seeing as I mainly just play for the fun of it rather than the competitive aspect), I'm KIND OF disappointed the game may have the same amount or even less characters than in Brawl. At the same time, I'm very interested to see how existing characters will be changed, such as how Bowser (who looks the most like any of his actual main series representations looked in ANY Smash game) is now faster and such.
One thing that people have to be prepared for is for characters to get cut to make way for new ones. Two of the likeliest candidates for something like that are Lucario and Ike, due to them replacing other characters in a similar fashion. However, I feel like their movesets don't entirely carry over perfectly for the most likely candidates to replace them, so they might NOT get cut for that reason. I certainly WOULD love to see Mewtwo boot Lucario out and take the spot back, especially given certain Pokemon X/Y features many are probably privy to at this point.
A character situation that has confounded me is Sheik. While the age or modern relevance of a character hasn't really been only deciding factor, allowing classic game icons like Ice Climbers and Pit to shine in the limelight, the latter's case even renewing interest in their respective franchise, Shiek runs into a rather unique problem. Zelda constantly changes with the progression of the Zelda series, and in Brawl's case (since Sheik had a Twilight Princess design considered during THAT game's development that was used for Brawl) the pieces fell into place quite smoothly. However, Zelda's design has changed yet again, but once again with no Sheik. Will Sheik be redesigned again? Will Zelda retain her Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess design? Or will Sheik be eliminated entirely? Or perhaps would Toon Zelda/"Sheik" finally be realized in an effort to keep the character concept alive while branching off with Skyward Sword's Zelda in a different direction?
Then off course there's the Ryu, Ken and Akuma of Smash. While its clear the subtle nuances allow the three characters to play differently, Falco and Wolf are cut from Fox's mold, no question about it. That being said, if one was to be cut, which would it be? Or would it be both? Hard to say, both likely have their fans.
Two other characters I've been batting around in my head as candidates for the chopping block are Meta Knight and Dedede. Sakurai has apparently said that he doesn't like to over-represent his own series in the Smash games, and now that Kid Icarus is kind of in his care and since it is possible interest in THAT game might merit the addition of a corresponding character, perhaps Sakurai might consider cutting one of these two Kirby characters. Perhaps the fact that Meta Knight overpowers a number of other characters in Brawl might have made cutting him a viable option for game balance. However, I personally don't want to see EITHER of them go, and given that they are fairly popular I think it isn't likely, at least for reasons of popularity..
Anyway, I'm much more interested to see who would be added rather than who would be cut, so I'll be very excitable over the next few months as 2014 approaches. I just hope it doesn't have to be delayed like Brawl was, though I know it is sometimes inevitable.
