Really the only reason it's continued for so long is because it's treated like a cartoon instead of a show, something happens in an episode, (conflict) and by the end of the episode, or the next episode, that something is resolved. There's no ongoing conflict, and no real deep story to it, that's why it's able to still be a thing.
I never understood why so many fans were entitled or really pissed off by some events within the show (not defending it per say as I don't think it's a good show, but still have attachment due to nostalgia). What I mean for example is I remember someone on another forum being upset that Ash had to use his Pokedex on a Coffing in one of the newer seasons. Many were upset as they said that this did not match up canonically as he had seen one before, but many people forget that the show's intended audience are kids of this generation, not the same kids from 10+ years ago who are now grown and have even kids of their own.
If they really want to continue the show, they should end Ash's journey, and reboot it to center around a new character.
