A badge will create a distinction. Some users will have it, and others won't. It will still create a sort of "inner circle" mentality as it's not something that can be earned by people outside of the circle.
With it being optional through the use of the custom title, it's up to the specific member in question to make the distinction for themselves, or not to do it at all. It's not a status identifier as something like a badge or special usergroup would be.
I know I have the Founding Member title so it might sound hypocritical coming from me, but this title was earned through helping with the site before it went public and not simply given to me for existing. ...Does that make sense?
I'm glad you said something about that because I was curious. I was like "but I was one of the first on DYKG!" hahaha. I didn't realize it's for members who helped before it went public.
