So, why didn't we just stick with the old DYKG forums and why are they suddenly being shut down for this generic site?

While I agree with Zombie, if you must have an answer, it's because this site was custom written to integrate into the MyBB forum software for user accounts and for that to work, the site and the forum have to be in the same place. As for the site being generic, I'm not sure what you're looking at but I'd say it's pretty unique. Nobody is forcing you to use the forums though so if you're really that against it, you are of course welcome to simply not post.
