I'm just bad at games in general, so perhaps my opinion is somewhat skewed. I still haven't finished Rhythm Paradise because of that terrible level based around the offbeat (I thought I was somewhat rhythmic until I got to that part), and Picross e on the eShop got way too hard in the Free Mode puzzles. Sonic Chronicles had a ridiculously high level curve, too; it got frustratingly hard for 13-year-old me to blaze through the game without grinding so I eventually sold it.
Difficulty is a major obstacle with retro games. I never got past World 2 in Super Mario Bros. 3 and had to use savestates to beat Super Mario Bros. At least the 3D Classics version of Kid Icarus had auto-save between levels (although I used a walkthrough for the fortress levels; who wouldn't!?). Perhaps easiness is the main reason why I love Kirby's Adventure so much compared to other retro games.
