I bought the hd version of that game this year and I was dreading that final battle because before I always failed it no matter how well prepared I was, I was just not strong enough. This time around I leveled up as much as my patience allowed it and that fight was surprisingly challenging but not so much that I didn't have fun. And I beat it.
I think as kids we play games that are really challenging and sometimes impossible for us to beat but then we go back later as an adult when our skills to play video games has drastically improved (one hopes) and wonder why we struggled so much with something to begin with. I had that moment with the end fight for Legend of the Dragoon on the PS1. That fight takes at least 30 minutes because it is like 3-4 stages before you beat the Boss.
This can also have the opposite effect.
When you do something as a kid, because you spent so much time doing it, then go back to it and find it damn near impossible, and wonder how you did it as a kid.
Take, for example, my LTTP and Minish Cap saves. They each have all the items, damn near every heart and are the closest games I have that 100%. The ironic thing is I never finished them because it was too hard and my childish mind affected how I played the game.
