I would feel the most safe as a crew man under Archer in a war/battle situation. I base this on both soundness of mind and ingenuity.
Kirk is the most unpredictable.
Picard is clearly the most logical captain, and is the greatest with negotiating. I say that he would be the greatest at contacting new species and most interesting captain to watch.
Janeway, I feel, is the most vengeful captain. I feel that she has the most realistic portrayal of a captain.
Sisko is the curve ball. I would trust his judgements as a commander, but the whole spiritual side did get in the way occasionally.
But, in any case... TOS has the most unique/left field plots. My fave out of all of them is still TNG, but I do love me some DS9 for the simple reason of the Ferengi.
I don't know much about the later 3 shows but I can tell you my impressions from people showing a few episodes.
Kirk is a wominizing jackass, but can control a situation when the time comes. Also loves to fight
Picard is more of a smart caption who likes to think his way out of a confrontation, but will use a blaster "phazer" to help solve a problum. One of the coolest heads out of the five.
Janeway is crazy. Any logical tactic of hers involves blowing up the ship, killing the thing of the week, or both. She's also kinda fun to watch.
Sisco reminds me of Picard, but like Q once said "much easier to provoke," though it's a lot fun to see him punch Q right in the nose.
Archer is another story. I find him a person who hates his job becuse he's surrounded by people he does not like (even though he hand picked a few of them). I can see why people don't like Enterprise.
I like the storys of TNG and VOY, and if I had to rank my favorite captions it would be Picard, Sisco, Janeway, Kirk, and Archer. (This came from watching only 5 episodes of DS9 and like 2-3 of Enterprise.)
