If I'm not mistaken, both Microsoft and Sony are actually making a small profit for each console sale.

Actually Sony is still selling each console at a loss. The fact that they sold out repeatedly on the console is a good sign of a healthy company and their faith in their product plus they felt that customers buying the system will buy other things to supplement the loss like games, PS+ subscription and maybe extra peripherals .
