Actually Sony is still selling each console at a loss. The fact that they sold out repeatedly on the console is a good sign of a healthy company and their faith in their product plus they felt that customers buying the system will buy other things to supplement the loss like games, PS+ subscription and maybe extra peripherals .

Eh, Sony has been hemorrhaging money for a while, I don't think they've made a profit off the PS3 yet, and the Vita is literally a thorn in their side, the PS4 is selling well, but I'll assume it'll stagnate by 2015 or so unless the games are there.
I mean no one wants the Wii U, nor the Xbone and the PS4 is their only option but it seems as if they've come to a point where even the casuals don't want to buy a console because they're all crap.
I don't remember much of the switch between the 6th gen to the 7th, but I do remember the 360 and Wii having tons of games, and getting loads of sales (albeit the Wii got the sales from the gimmick) while the PS3 stagnated until 2008/9 or so due to having nogaems.
I still wonder if the Xbone will become like the Saturn, they fail in the west, focus on Japan and fail in both areas and then speed up the 8th gen.
That would be pretty good imo, Nintendo and Sony could get a fresh start in a new gen, Microsoft could give it their last chance too.
