I saw Godzilla too, and I was pretty dang disappointed.
Before you jump on the whole "Oh you just wanted to see another dumb action movie!" defense bandwagon, I want to clarify that I really enjoyed the early parts of the movie and I was excited to see a great story interwoven to the typical "giant lizard destroys cities" formula. It started with a great main character who had just enough backstory and motivation to invest the audience in him, and then...
Heisenberg is killed by a pole or something in a really unceremonious way. Then we cut to Army-Man-Dad-Son as he rides fifteen different vehicles back to his wife and kid.
Ok, I get that the movie wanted to build up Godzilla and not blow its load too early, I can respect that. The problem is that this guy isn't a character, he's a plank of wood with a face drawn on in crayon. He didn't have any real character and his wife didn't have any real character, so I don't care at all about these two people the movie is deciding to focus a majority of its time on. The movie was less "Godzilla" and more "Army Guy vs. incompetent U.S. Military decisions, featuring a cameo by Godzilla!"
Even when it did eventually boil down to the monster fighting that it hyped up so much, it was all smoky and dark which made it hard to see any of the potentially cool action, then it was over in a flash. There were two great scenes that come to mind when I think of the action, but aside from those, you might as well just watch the trailers.
I'm not saying that the movie was a complete waste of time or anything of the sort, Bryan Cranstan WAS great in it, and so were a few of the supporting actors, and there were some fantastic shots and brilliant cinematography behind the picture, but the movie wastes so much time with these mannequins that we just can't give a shit about with very little payoff.
Oh, and the news headline near the end with "GODZILLA, OUR SAVIOR?" was really obnoxious to see, and everyone in Western California is dead from radiation poisoning.
