My girlfriend, an avid reader of the series, actually has the same theory as you. She's fairly certain that the Hound is still alive. I know this because she accidentally spoiled his "death" for me a couple weeks ago. We were talking about Aria and mentors, and I didn't specify when I said "Honestly, I don't even think HE is dead. We didn't see him die on screen, you know?" and she goes "How'd you know the Hound dies?" and I'm like "... What? =<" and she was like "Wait. No. What are you talking about?" and I'm like "I was talking about Syrio Forel" and she's like "Ohh.... I though you meant The Hound." and I'm like "No, dude. Hound dies?" THERE WENT THAT ONE FOR ME.

I honestly need to stay off the internet. Almost all of the deaths were spoiled from me by someone, somehow, for this season. The only death I didn't know about completely was Shea's. Tywin's was a surprise, as well, but only in that I didn't know when it was coming. I knew of his death, though. Jojen's death surprised the Hell out of the girlfriend though. That said, I asked her if it happened in the books and she admitted she usually skims through Bran's parts because they're essentially 30 pages of "I'm a wolf. I'm hungry. Bark. I hope one day I'll be a greenseer" each.
