That's called a 2D fighter, which pretty much every successful fighting game franchise is. 3D fighters like DBZ games from Budokai Tenkaichi 1 and onward tend to do poorly in comparison. By all rights, this game using a Tekken like engine should produce the best product possible for a pokemon fighting game.
Not necessarily. Tekken is a 3D fighter and has been for a long time now and is the best selling fighting game series of all time.
I'm hyped for Pokken Fighters but that's only because Namco are behind it. Lucario is the new Mishima, clearly.
Tekken uses both types actually. The story tends to use 3D fighting but online play like the recent Tekken Revolution free-to-play game uses 2D fighting and that part of the game is what people look for. Tekken is in tournaments with it's 2D fighting for eample, not the 3D.

Personaly, I like DBZ fighters over Tekken. I preffer the feel of each game (at lest the older games) to the hard to master controls of Tekken.
That's typical of someone who isn't hardcore into fighting games, so I assume you most likely aren't. However that doesn't change the fact that DBZ games fail horribly as fighters in a financial way when compared to any decent fighting game franchise.
