No Man's Sky will feature (2^64) 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 worlds. If you were to spend a second on each planet, it would take around 585 Billion years to explore them all.

I'd like to point out that the source got their math wrong (or IGN misquoted them), and that's why I'm posting this here to avoid confusion. The source says spending a second on each planet would take 5 billion years only.

The total is around 585 billion, not 5 billion.

Sean Murray, Managing Director of Hello Games, went to the PlayStation Blog to correct the '5 billion' years quote that was being spread by games media.
"Really this seed defines how many planets you can discover before things start to go a bit crazy and undefined. For us we choose a big number. We’re working to a 64-bit system, which is 2 to the power of 64… or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 possible planets. Even if a planet is discovered every second, it’ll take 585 billion years to find them all!"
