It's surprisingly hard to explain someone why a game that has the same name as the original isn't a remake or a remaster but a reboot by the same name.

Remaster = Same thing, better graphics.
Remake = Some parts of the game changed of a previous game in an ongoing series.
Reboot = A remade game of a series that stopped some time ago, can be a carbon copy or have some things changed.

That's how I would define it.

You would think it's that easy but it seems to be built into some people that no matter how many times this is explained, they are synonymous.

That definition of a reboot is slightly off, though. Reboot completely overhauls the series and starts it from scratch. Just look at the new Tomb Raider, for example.
