Iwata did so much for Nintendo.
When HAL Labs made Pokemon Stadium, he recreated the Pokemon battle system in a week, without any design documents. Note the fact that the N64 was hard as he'll to program for.
When Game Freak, couldn't get Gold and Silver to fit on a Gameboy cartridge, he created a new compression algorithm that was so good, they had enough space to fit the Kanto region.
When Earthbound was in a developmental rut and almost cancelled, he rewrote the entire game' s core code, and because of him they were able to finish the entire game in a year.
He debugged Super Smash Bros. Melee himself to make sure it shipped on time.
He also programmed all early Kirby titles, and worked on every major Gamecube games.
Beyond his programming prowess, he took Nintendo from a 3rd rut, to 1st place glory.
Iwata affected not only mine, but many other lives with the work he did at HAL and Nintendo. Pokemon, Kirby, Smash and Mother wouldn't be the same without his programming prowess. Hell I wouldn't be the same without him. I owe my childhood to this man.
Say what you want about him, but you can't deny the affect he has had on not only Nintendo, but games as a whole.
"My name tag says I'm a corporate president, my mind says I'm a video game developer, but my heart says I'm a gamer." -- Satoru Iwata, 2005.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata. Even if you leave us, your legacy will live on.
