Robert Kirkman has said that they have enough material for another 5 seasons (season 7 just started), and by the time they reach that the comics will be 6 or 7 years ahead of that. I really don't think we are close to the end.
Andrew Lincoln, the lead actor as Rick Grimes, has been quoted saying that he hasn't watched the first episode and will not watch any of them until it's all over.
I think I'll wait, then I'll spend about two months binge watching them !
Edit : Then again, several years is a long time.
