Although it is now a ghost town with very few residents, Ohio used to lay claim to one of the most interesting town names in the country: Knockemstiff (Knock 'Em Stiff). There are two theories on how the town got it's name. The more common of the two is that a woman asked a preacher what to do with her cheating husband. The man of the cloth replied to just "knock 'em stiff", and the town became knows as the place where wives would knock their husbands stiff. The other theory is that moonshine was very popular in the area, and knock 'em stiff was a local slang phrase for the stuff.
Whichever the case, it's an interesting name for a town.
