I will personally say that I had an experience that gave me a new view on that. Once, in a public restroom, I saw a women walk in, very clearly feminine. I very kindly tried to tell her that it was the men's room and the woman's was across the hall.
She responded that she was transgender, and it was potentially illegal to go into the woman's room. I highly doubt anyone would have noticed her going to the woman's room and thought she was a man. But, going into the men's room just drew a ton of attention to herself.
Most restrooms have individual stalls anyways. I don't really care which you enter as long as you don't bother me.
