Basically, those folks that despite living in a world were superpowers, fantastic elements, gods, widespread genetic engineering, tranhumanism or other artificial enhancements (like magic) are widespread, they can still handle themselves against said beings despite not having any of those abilities. In other words, they are the in-universe equivalent of the Batman.
