(Other than Pokémon Let's GO!, though I don't see there being that much left to talk about concerning it.) And a Smash-focused direct would have happened eventually, so at least be glad there getting it out of the way first.
And even if they did do a regular direct right now, they wouldn't really talk about much. We already know there are some games we don't know about coming this Fall, but I doubt they would be very big titles. (Though they'd likely take a good while explaining them.) Plus, they would likely fully explain the online service, and all the smaller indie stuff the like to focus on. What I'm saying is it wouldn't be nearly as exciting as people would hope. (Especially if they go in expecting games that have no release window/haven't even been announced.)
And for Ultimate "not having much more to talk about". We no nothing about this game in terms of modes alone. Not to mention new characters, new/returning stages, how online will work, trophies, extras, etc. There's a ton to be expanded on, so it's not a purposeless direct.
I disagree with pretty much all of this. I'm not asking for new IP's or sequel's directly (though I know a lot of people who like Animal Crossing so for their sake it would be nice to see) but I've seen so much of Smash Bros already, that I would prefer anything that's left is left to be be found out by players so there are at least some surprises. What I am asking for, more than anything else, is updates to games that were already announced like Luigi's Mansion, Yo-kai Watch Blasters and other titles I already mentioned. Also, Nintendo giving some insight as to what's happening at the early going for next year would be nice since so little is left for this year that more than a few fans are going to care about outside of Smash. As for new characters, there won't be many as was made clear by Sakurai-san himself so I wouldn't be shocked to see no new characters announced this Wednesday. Whatever, the case may be with Smash, I'm done with it. I hate that Nintendo has taken this route every year since Iwata-san died, of focusing on one title so much that everything else feels insignificant, and this is the worst case of it so far. The hype for a game company can only go so long when they aren't marketing to all kinds of consumers they have the potential to appeal to, and this is a prime example of them not doing that. If anything, this direct, which was inevitable, should have happened in September, where Nintendo is going to lose out on sales to the major games that aren't going to be on their systems. It would have given people reason to talk about them during that month, and if they had already updated previously announced titles and kept other fans happy, more people would be receptive to a Smash focused direct. Doing things this way, people who felt Nintendo ignored what they cared about most, only end more frustrated with them. You're right about one thing though, Nintendo wouldn't likely have much to talk about that would interest a large number of people. They don't do that anymore, because they have no idea how to run the company without Iwata's guidance, that they threw out quicker than we all came to realize how serious his cancer was.
This isn't the only opportunity Nintendo has to announce/showcase other games before 2019. Between the Online service, Super Mario Party and those unannounced Fall games, it's almost guaranteed we'll get a regular direct sometime before the holidays. (Early/mid-September, would be my guess.) They're not "ignoring" anyone, even though it would be better if they communicated this. Also, saying that Nintendo is doomed because they're not showing anything right now is a bit melodramatic, no? Sure, if they keep sparse on info between now and December it'll suck for a bit and it might somewhat effect sales, but long term it isn't going to matter much. Nintendo has pretty sparse periods of releases before (including during Iwata's presidency.), but this is no where near as bad as it could get during the WiiU's lifespan. (Not to mention the Switch is far more successful than the WiiU was, and is quickly gaining 3rd party support which helps with sparse 1st party releases.) So if Nintendo doesn't feel like sharing anything else right now, whatever. It's fine. Not ideal, but it's also not the end of the world.
Did I say anything about Nintendo being doomed? No, I didn't, I just said it's annoying that they get so hyper-focused on one game that everything else feels like it hardly matters and that it's hard to care about what they are doing until they talk about the other games they have that people want to see. I also never said it was too late for them to have an update direct sometime in this year, just that people would be more receptive to a Smash direct if they did it later rather than first. I also, also never said that they were ignoring everyone, but that it feels that way. Man, did you even read my post? Or are you simply exaggerating things to try and make a point that isn't there? Whatever the case is, you've got everything I said wrong that you commented on. Also, as far as I and many of the people who would share my opinion are concerned, things have sucked for Nintendo since mid June, so almost two months, and waiting to make things right again is a bad move by Nintendo no matter how you slice it. Not only will it effect sales, but consumer interest will go down, possibly long term if they don't prove they care about other games they have in the works. Also, trying to use the Wii U to make a point doesn't make a lick of sense, considering Nintendo was clearly focusing more on the 3DS while the Wii U floundered about, and it constantly had games worth getting, just like the Switch did last year. The 3rd party support is nice, and Nintendo needed it, but they aren't marketing those games enough either which is part of the battle to make sure 3rd party games continue to be worth it for the developers who make games for the Switch. That needs to be focused on badly, because if the 3rd party games start selling poorly due to Nintendo's focusing on their own first party titles, less and less people will want to support the Switch and it will lose sales in the latter parts of it's life. You are saying things and thinking too broadly so far as I can tell, and putting words in my mouth, but if you want to try again and not do that, I might hear it, otherwise this no longer serves a purpose because you appear currently to be missing the points I'm trying to make.
