In spite of the recent controversy surrounding the microtransactions of DMCV (basically it allows you to buy red orbs like in the Special Edition of DMC4) I am going to leave this here:

TL: DR Even if you are a scrub, you don't need to pay a single coin since the game is very generous with the Red Orbs.
The game does have microtransactions, yes. But those are entirely optional, the game is not build around those. The are using the same system from the 4th game.
But hey, if you don't want to take my word for it, then actually read the article. It was made by someone who played the demo. Or you can ask any person who plays DMC regularly and they will tell you that just because your weapons are more powerful doesn't mean you are automatically going to be better at the game. In other words, having a bunch of skills has nothing to do with how well you can use them all.
Either that or you can ask Matt Walker.
