It is highly speculated that Mr. Karate/Takuma Sakazaki is actually Karate-Man, the protagonist from Street Smart. Many of Karate-Man's moves are very similar to moves used by Kyokugen characters. His color pallets from across all versions of the game are also very similar to the design of Mr. Karate and Ryo.

In Addition, the Player 2 character has been speculated to be the biological father of the Bogard brothers from Fatal Fury. On top of sharing many of the same design features between Crusher and Terry, the music for the first stage was reused as the co-op battle theme from Fatal Fury: King of Fighters.
