When Mettalica's bass guitarist Cliff Burton died in 1986, the band seriously considered replacing him with bassist Les Claypool, who had tried out for the spot. In the end, they decided not to use him...because he was too good of a musician. Seriously, they were afraid his talent would overshadow the rest of the band and make Les look like a freak. Les Claypool would become famous in his own right as lead singer and bass guitarist of the funk metal group Primus, which he was the primary songwriter for. Anyone that has listened to both bands though can only imagine what in the world Metallica would have sounded like with Mr. Claypool.
