My mom is basically the opposite of this. She knows I am a very basic person that only likes video game related things, so when a gift giving holiday comes up or if a video game I want has just released she'll give me the money to buy it instead of buying me some random clothes that I don't need. She would much rather buy me something I would actually use than something I wouldn't. In your case, do what Cucoos said, just ask for money to buy what you want during the holidays.
