I'd call that more of a coincidence. Crafting elements in video games DO predate Minecraft. Hell, even the concept of inserting a -craft suffix into the name predates Minecraft. Come to think of it, Zelda: A Link to the Past ALMOST has a moment of weapon crafting in it. Sure, its more of a side quest to get a character from point A to point B, but doing so gives you the opportunity to upgrade your sword. While not EXACTLY the same, in a world of swordplay and magic it seems easier for elements of crafting to be feasible. But I don't really know for sure, maybe Miyamoto just plays Minecraft all day.
It does have it's negative impact though. It's actually on the level of pathetic with the amount of crafting type indie games that we've gotten, or the fact that the most popular indie game on XBLA Indie is Fortress Craft. It's taken away creativity for mediocrity on an Indie space. Games that have all gained a decent level of exposure have been swept under because of Fortress Crafts high popularity.
And I do like Minecraft. Played it since launch and I don't think it's overrated.
