The Worms series originated with a different name, Total Wormage, which was a spin on the name of another popular game at the time, Total Carnage. Even the title font was very similar.

The game's creator, Andy Davidson, originally created the game as an entry to a contest held by the British Amiga Magazine. Andy didn't win but got an honorable mention, which led to him to seek a publisher for the game, and eventually to Team17.
