At the end of the E3 2013 reveal trailer, it shows Mario getting to the top of the flag pole and getting an extra life and 10,000 points for doing so.
But in the final game, you just get the 10,000 points.

This was most likely done because using the cat climb ability could become a cheap way of getting 1-ups.
