Nier: The game may seem average to mediocre by a mere passing glance, but it does two things incredibly well. The story which can be surprisingly emotional and well paced, to the genres it covers. It literally has it's hand in almost every genre. Survival-horror, top down dungeon crawlers, 2D and 3D platformers, text adventures, even farming simulation! Seriously this game has it all and it's (in my opinion) vastly underrated.

You forgot to mention how amazing the music is. Seriously, this is my favorite overworld theme.


Also, Grimmoire Weiss is one of the best video game characters ever. That's not an opinion, that's fact.

I've only played so few games that do such a fantastic job of immersing you in the world of a cartoon. Every little nook and cranny is filled with little details, and tons of references to the show. The gameplay is fun, has humour thats just as great as Seasons 1-3 of the show, and a badass soundtrack.

The Ys series (psp/ps2/steam) is something i love but none of my friends seem to know about it.... the music is some of the best video game music i've ever heard.
Also they earlier legend of heroes games (psp) (but those are a bit annoying to play so i kinda understand why it never got popular)
Also Avalon code (ds), i picked it up on a whim and found a neat little game with a lot of heart and charm

Yeah, the Ys games are pretty great, more people need to play them... even if it's just for the awesome music.

Avalon Code, to me, wasn't the perfect game, but it certainly was interesting, especially in the plot department. I really had a lot of trouble even trying to get all the pages at 100%, though... I gave up when someone else in the house wanted to play it. Also the whole love aspect just felt weird. Everything else was pretty well done, though.

Let's see, to add to the list... most people haven't played the Atelier (PS2, PS3)games, so I recommend those.

I was once at crossroads. Do I buy Disgaea or do I buy Atelier. I went with Disgaea but I've always respected the Atelier series for what it is. I was happy to be able to play as Marie in Cross Edge.

Funny you mention that... I was at those same crossroads long ago, as well. xD I even picked Disgaea, but I tried the PS2 Atelier games years later, and loved them. Granted, I think the PS3 games are way better, but the PS2 games stand on their own right.

I know I'm getting off topic, but I never really enjoyed Makai Kingdom. I felt kind of thrown together... and leveling in that game felt so slow and cumbersome compared to other NIS games. Then again, I didn't really like the non-grid system that it and Phantom Brave used for battles either, so that might affect my opinion a bit too :p

Er, back on topic, Soul Nomad is amazing and everyone should try it. Great story and setting... and that evil path, oh my god the evil path. I'm not sure how much of this community looks into NIS games, but whoever likes SRPGs should definitely get it!

From what I've seen of the game it certainly doesn't look as good as, say, Disgaea but I'm willing to give it a chance, mostly because of its ties to the Disgaea series itself. Well, that, and I kinda want to know more about Asagi.

Grandia: I have fond memories of watching my brother play this as we were growing up. Great game. Good story and gameplay, but I'll admit the voice acting is.... pretty sub par.

Brave Fencer Musashi: Same thing as with Grandia; fun and awesome game if you can get past the "meh" voice acting.

[2D Brain]

Brave Fencer is one of the best Zelda-ish action rpgs ever. I'd at least put it in the top 5 or 10 with stuff like Legend of Oasis and Alundra.

That's another game I wish Square would put on PSN in North America.

Has anyone ever heard of a game called The Granstream Saga? It was a weird RPG-ish game with anime cutscenes on the PS. I remember having it on a demo disc when I was a kid and it always intrigued me.
